Test of your age

How many of you remember this phrase?

"Salami Salami Boloni" (actually spelled bologna)

I will give you a hint. It was a line in a show that also had "I yam what I yam!" Anyway, I just recall this as being one of those kid phrases back in the 60's.

LateNight 03-06-2007 01:58 PM

I yam what I yam

A really old Popeye..

rhertz 03-06-2007 10:37 PM

Latenight,

This is the only reference I could find on the Popeye episode I was thinking of:

http://honeysucklesummer.atlblogs.co...es/002216.html

Do you think you can find this one on youtube? The one where the strangely slurpy-looking natives would bow down to their king in fluid s-shaped movements... bowing once, murmuring "salami"... bowing twice, murmuring "salami"... bowing the third time, "exclaiming "boloni"

rhertz 03-07-2007 10:20 PM

OK, now for test #2...

How many of you remember the "Frito Bandito"??

Hint: Popular food commercial....

(Bonus points if you can recite his jingle)

LateNight 03-07-2007 10:31 PM

You nailed it!

Amazing the power of the Internet. Thanks Latenight!

:hifive:

Al Swearengen 03-07-2007 10:48 PM

Ha! Ofcourse I remember the Frito Bandito! I remember as a child noticing that we'd not seen or heard of the Frito Bandito for some time, and my mother explaining to me that the Mexican community, up in arms over the perceived slight, had forced Frito Lay to "retire" the colorful character from their advertisements. Thus, the Bandito became one of the first victims of "political correctness".

The bastards ! :D As I was watching that youtube video, I was reminded of some of the old speedy consales (sp?) cartoon. And it would always display all the other mexican mice as lazy and drunk. ;)

"no no señor, it is time for siesta"

AnimeSpirit 03-08-2007 09:51 AM

Speedy Gonzales wasn't before my time, but Frito Bandito definitely was. I've never heard of him in my life.

LateNight 03-10-2007 09:53 AM

Just follow the bouncing frito.

That's right you heard me. Sing along and follow the bouncing frito.

LOL, I knew this voice sounded familiar. It's freakin' Bugs Bunny. http://www.caseyjones.net/frito.gif

AnimeSpirit 03-10-2007 11:27 AM

I did some digging and found that Frito Bandito's voice actor was Melvin Blanc who was also the voice actor for (you guessed it) Bugs Bunny, Speedy Gonzales, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, and Barney Rubble.

rhertz 03-10-2007 11:38 PM

Great find! Thanks for posting and sharing. I had no idea that the Frito Bandito's voice was Mel Blanc's.

AnimeSpirit 03-10-2007 11:40 PM

It wasn't a hard search. You can HEAR the Speedy Gonzales in Bandito's voice.

LOL from the first "Aye, yii, yii, yiiii," I could just see Bugs strolling along, and singing some song, ol' Bugs was always singing something.

But yea, you could just about hear a little bit of Bugs, daffy and all the other voices he did over the years come through in the Frito Bandito.

LateNight 03-11-2007 10:27 AM

Anyone remember Space 1999

not going back quite as far as the Frito Bandito, which ran from '67 to the early 70's I believe. Anyone remember Space 1999 ? It was just another cheesy 70's scifi t.v. show :D First aired in '75

Quote:

Basic premise

The underlying storyline of Space: 1999 centered on the plight of the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha following a calamity on September 13, 1999 (hence the title). A huge nuclear waste dump on the far side of the Moon detonates in a massive thermonuclear explosion initiated by the build up of magnetic radiation which was released causing a nuclear chain reaction. The force of the explosion causes the Moon to be sent hurtling out of Earth's orbit and into deep space at colossal speed, stranding the 311 crewmembers, in effect becoming the "spaceship" on which our heroes travel, looking for a new home. During their interstellar journey, the Alphans encounter a vast array of alien civilizations, dystopian societies, and strange phenomena previously unseen by man.

rhertz 03-11-2007 10:43 PM

OK, next test... How many of you ate Space Food Sticks(tm) as a child back in the late 60's or early 70's? I remember MAKING my mom ask the manager at Brookshires at Madison Park when they would get space food sticks. Eventually they did. I was in space !

LateNight 03-11-2007 10:51 PM

Space Food Sticks, I wonder what marketing genius came up with that idea :D

Nope can't say I ever had one of those, or ever heard of such.

And lets not forget
A-OK Space Energy Sticks

rhertz 03-11-2007 11:55 PM

Oh man it didn't get any better than drinking Tang and eating space food sticks like the astronauts! The peanut butter flavor was the best. I didn't care much of the chocolate or carmel flavors.

Almost as good as "Fizzies".. Anyone remember those alka-selzer-like drink flavor tablets that fizzed when dropped into a glass of water?? I used to chew on the rootbeer flavor "straight up" which had a "pop rocks" like effect!! LOL

"Space Food Sticks" are the original. I never heard of A-OK Space Energy Sticks which is obviously a rip off. :D

rhertz 03-12-2007 01:07 PM

Oh man, Fizzies are back!!

http://www.fizzies.com

I dare someone to swallow a whole Rootbeer tablet and wash it down with Coke and jump up and down... :D

I remember pop rocks my grandmother bought them for me all the time. They would sizzle in your mouth. I wonder why they quit making them.

They still make Pop Rocks, caught my kids with those things here pretty recently.

And here's your fizzies

Al Swearengen 03-12-2007 07:51 PM

ya know its weird...I remember Tang being the drink of astronauts and all that, but I dont remember the "Space Food Sticks"? Sounds like I missed out on a good thing there. Hey, remember those little wadded-up paper spitwad thingies that would blow up when you threw them against a hard surface? Those were a blast, and I think they still make em. Back when they came out in the 70's they were a big hit with us kids. My dad showed us a way to make our own...all ya needed was a common roll of paper caps, like the old fashioned capguns used, a BB, and some plastic wrap. You'd cut off a little square of paper cap, place the BB behind it, then twist it up in the little square of plastic wrap...PRESTO! Worked like a charm, too.

Al Swearengen 03-12-2007 08:00 PM

I just thought of another "age test"...who remembers "Ultra Man"? How about "Captain Scarlett"? There was this one show along the same lines as Ultra Man, sort of a Japanese production, where the bad guys had these cars that could convert to planes. Maybe that WAS Ultra Man. The bad guys wore these black pantyhose things over their faces, and when one of the good guys shot them, theyd turn into a puddle of vomit on the floor? Anybody remember that?

Or how about "Dark Shadows", with Barnabus Collins? Or how about the monday night "Creature Feature"? Buwhahahaha:eek:

AnimeSpirit 03-12-2007 08:25 PM

I remember Ultra Man, but that was so long ago that I can't remember a thing about the series.

They actually sell those poppers in the south for mardi gras. They also sell them at the $1 store, in s. la that is.

Does anyone remember stretch armstrong? Or the clackers that were made out of some type of glass in the 60's? They were gorgeous and stopped making them I assume due to the danger of them cracking. I know I had a couple of them now they are plastic and not the same.

http://www.bigredtoybox.com/articles/stretchindex.shtml

I found this about the clackers and the description is to the T

I want to know the name of this 1970's toy. It was comprised of a plastic ring. To the ring were secured two strings. Each string was in turn connected to a glass sphere. The object was to hold the ring and flip your wrist in order to make the two glass balls strike each other. This made a clicking sound. Shortly after marketing, the toy was recalled because the glass balls were breaking and causing injuries to eyes.

Oh man, "Stretch Armstrong" was great...I never had one myself but a friend did. And wasnt there another "stretch" character, some green monster guy that was supposedly Stretch Armstrong's arch enemy? I vaguely recall the clacker toy you refer to, Scarlett, but Im kinda fuzzy on that.

Now I do remember Dark Shadows. Another favorite was Night Gallery. but I don't remember "Creature Feature".

I do remember "Dialing for Dollars" which always hosted a scary B&W movie. It lasted a long time. Years later, I actually got called once, but I wasn't home and my answering machine picked up.

Other old time favorites were two local afternoon shows called Papa John's on KSLA and the Laught Alot Club on KTBS where kids got to be on TV between the cartoons during the breaks.

LateNight 03-12-2007 09:36 PM

Speaking of Ultraman

I think ultraman ran from like 1966-'67
And for your viewing pleasure. here's Episode one, in 3 parts..
I used to watch it as a kid, coming home after school.. it was already in re-runs by the time i saw it :)

Episode 1 part 1

Episode 1 part 2

Episode 1 part 3

scarlett 03-12-2007 10:38 PM

How about Rock’em Sock’em Robots? I had just about every toy that was ever made. I think my father wanted a son and bought me every boy type toy there was, including a mini bike and 3-wheeler.

scarlett 03-12-2007 10:51 PM

Rock 'em Sock 'em robots.. seems there was always one of the guys, where his head would just pop off as soon as things got started.

Al Swearengen 03-13-2007 12:58 AM

Ha! Yeah, my family had a "pet rock" back in the 70's too. Some genius took a rock, glued a bit of brillo-like "hair" on it, glued a pair of "eyes" on it and sure as hell, we bought one. It occupied an honored place on the bookshelf in our living room, along with various other knickknacks. Yeah, LateNight is exactly right about the "Rock Em Sock Em Robots"...there was always one of the two that had the head that popped off easier than the other. Theres a pretty neat truck commercial on the TV these days featuring the Rock Em Sock Em's.

I know this maybe a girl thing but does anyone remember "gee your hair smells terrific" shampoo? I used it faithfully throughout my teen years and I guess it just went away and I never noticed.

LOL I remember the commercials for it..

Quote:

But Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific® shampoo is the one thing on your late 70s and 80s wish list that you won't ever find in thrift shops. In fact, you won't find it anywhere in the world - except for the Philippines.

Who cares, you ask? A rabid cult following of shampoo-crazed women roaming the Internet and duking it out with each other on ebay.

Jergens launched Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific® in 1974. It was mysteriously discontinued in the late 80s, much to the continued, prolonged, and loud chagrin of its devotees.

What's the big deal?

Men loved this shampoo. Like some perfumes, it seemed to travel on a mysterious channel running straight from the olfactory processor to the gonads. It was a little spicy, a little flowery - it was the madonna and the whore of shampoos. And it lasted - from the bus ride to school, to the bus ride back. No hapless boys ever found their intense morning attraction waning on the way home. No, no. Au contraire.

And Remember Tiger Beat magazine? Remember the interview with David Cassidy saying he loved the smell of a girl's hair washed with Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific®?

If you don't, many do. And they're the same women combing the Web in search of this miraculous substance, writing pleading letters to Vibelle Manufacturing Corporation in the Philippines (they bought the discontinued formula from Jergens, fueling speculation that the death of Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific® in America was an FDA matter), and kvetching about the new Filipino bottles with a floral design. (The original came in an unforgettable purple bottle with the whole, gloriously long, rainbow colored name in the rounded capital letters so popular with graphic designers at the time, and set off by quotation marks.)

So, Why Did Jergens Discontinue It?

This remains a mystery. Some believe that the formula for Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific® involved one or more of the following: occult substances such as eye of newt and tongue of bat, the harvesting of which now falls under the rubric of animal cruelty, fetal tissue, crack cocaine, formaldehyde (this is actually true), whale sperm, radioactive minx glands, or advanced alien technology. The only thing that's certain is that Jergens ain't telling. They send out extremely cryptic and weird messages to those who inquire as to its whereabouts.

Where Can I Get My Own?

Gird your virtual loins, and get into the massive North American smackdown over the few precious bottles floating around up here. That or find a friend in the Philippines willing to do some bartering.
