The Shreveport City Council has approved the city taking ownership of 17 vacant lots in Ledbetter Heights, the latest effort by the city to help a movie company build a $10 million studio on the western edge of downtown.

If the property owners don't go to court within 60 days to challenge the lots being taken for a "public purpose," the city will get title to the property.

No one lives on any of the lots, many of which have liens on them for failure to pay property taxes or keep the property up, Chief Administrative Officer Tom Dark said.

The city earlier agreed to spend $2 million to acquire other property in Ledbetter Heights for Millennium Films' studio.
Millennium has not started work on the property. Dark said they first had to get state tax credits that are provided to movie companies that do business in Louisiana.

Millennium has said it will build an office building, a soundstage, storage building and a carpentry shop. The film company said it might build more soundstages in the future.

That would be part of the studio's phase two, and the takeover of the 17 lots would be part of that phase, Dark said. The city would also have to buy additional property if that phase is built, Dark said.
Well don't this just beat all.
