Cicadas On Thier Way Up From Underground

Coming soon: Brood XIII. It sounds like a bad horror movie. But it's actually the name of the billions of cicadas expected to emerge this month in parts of the Midwest after spending 17 years underground.

Cicadas are awesome! :D I used to find their shells all over the place when I was a kid. Only once in a blue moon will you find one still in its shell, crawling around on the ground.

Cicadas are a LA classic summer time sound. In the dog days of summer that is all you can hear because there is no wind and it is to hot for the birds to be singing much. They run on a 17 year cycle.

If ya'll have noticed, Mississippi Kites are here in abundance now. They always show up prior to these cicadas coming out. This is their primary food source. It's strange to think of a hawk eating bugs but this is what they live on.

So how many of you are familiar with the Cicada Killer? Took this pic behind our shop last summer. This "beast" is 3-4 inches long and is as big around as a man's thumb.
