Needing home

My family of three needs a home....Since Katrina, there is nothing in Shreveport under $600 in areas with a good school district.

AnimeSpirit 09-06-2007 09:46 AM

No joke! Housing is getting rough around here. I've been renting at $800/mo for over a year and I'm ready to take out a mortgage myself. It has to be cheaper than renting.

joepole 09-06-2007 10:32 AM

Why would you expect good school districts to include super-cheap housing? Isn't that kind of self-contradictory? We want the best there is, but we want it to be cheap enough for anyone to take advantage of!

I have to admit, you have a point.

joepole 09-06-2007 02:37 PM

What makes a good school district?

In today's times? Not much if you ask me. I live in an area that was at one time the area to live in with the best schools. I won't go on and on about how unhappy I am with the school system here but I know from living there in Shreveport/Bossier City, not much really. You have your bad areas, ok areas and then your a little bit better. Ask some here about Parkway High School I bet 20 yrs ago it was the bomb, today its a joke period.

My old friend Scarlett good to see you on the board. Hope all is well down in hurricane land. I have had two daughters graduate from Parkway and third that is almost done. They all had really good grades and one had full scholarship and gradated Centenary in the top of her class. The second one has a scholarship and is a Jr. at LSU. Third is a 4.0 student and head of debate and will be in the top of her class. I went to Captain Shreve and back then we crossed the bridge to come visit Parkway girls.:smlove: With the white flight to Bossier and having military the over all quality of the students has gone way up over the years. I am sure there are some jokes then as there are now :laugh: so good to see you back on the board. Keep some ply wood handy ;)

Yup.. I served my time at Parkway, many many years ago ;)

Texasbelle 09-06-2007 07:08 PM

Parkway is one school in Shreveport/ Bossier I would not have a problem sending my son too. Now I would not send him to Byrd, Shreve, Southwood, or Magnet.

Al Swearengen 09-06-2007 09:26 PM

I would have to concur..there are worse schools than Parkway. I attended Parkway, but I actually graduated from Byrd. Though I never stepped foot into Byrd, it sure does look like a neat school to attend. Really nice campus.

Ms. Jackson, why not try Bossier? Just across the river, has good schools, and there IS affordable housing to be found for under $600.00/month, such as duplexes, manufactored housing and the like. Nothin fancy of course, but livable.

Wow, A PARKWAY reunion! Class of '89 here!:peace: I loved it- We're about to get a new one less than a mile from me. However, this is not the part of town to be looking for cheap housing. Good luck, just stay out of the shreveport system and you'll be o.k.:D

msjackson9660 09-07-2007 02:44 PM

Anyone?

I used to be a Printer until Chemo and Radiation has slowly invaded my bones to the point I do good to get out of bed. I could pay more rent at the time....now I can't. Circumstances have given me custody of my 12 year old grandson. The school he attended last year should be closed. People who have no choice to live "CHEAP" should expect less education for the children?

Of course not. Lets see what we can do for this good lady. Anybody in the membership a landlord or own rental property? Anybody have any connections with local or state government? Maam, surely you qualify for rent-controlled housing. I'll research it.

Texasbelle 09-07-2007 11:10 PM

What kind of cancer did you have? Have you been declared disabled? If she had Guardchief, she'll surely qualify for some assistance with rent. The problem will be finding a decent house to rent that will take Section 8. You need to look in the Thrifty Nickel for places to rent.

Do you have a car? Blanchard schools aren't bad and there is affordable housing in that area. That's one thought that comes to mind. Or how about an apartment? Let me think on this some more. And yes, there are plenty of people on this board that could maybe help.

I hear that Roger Christian Realty handles rental properties. I would try giving them a call. His website is www.rogerchristianrealty.com

After looking I see that they list rentals on their website!

Of course. They should expect less of everything, that's why it's cheaper.

Ms. Jackson

You are correct... property values have gone up nearly 33% in the last five years...so finding a home for under $600 that is large enough to accommodate your family will be challenging. I found no mentioning of whether you were looking to purchase or rent...Renting has its perks such as: no PMI, Taxes, insurance.. etc... but of course.. The landlord is probably in it to make money, so since he's paying those... so are you. I would recommend looking in the following areas: Southern Hills, Anderson Island, and outskirt areas such as Haughton, Keithville etc... I also would not rule out the possibility of getting into a town house. If you are looking to rent.. Unfortunately, you may be limited to areas such as Old Highland. Even so, that landlord would have to have purchased the home at a good price + 5 years ago, and received an excellent mortgage rate to be able to turn a profit....If you are interested in purchasing a home in that range, I can definitely introduce you to an agent who would be willing to get you into a home with no expense to you.. just let me know!
