Before a bolt can strike the Earth, the air must ionize and cut a conductive path to ground. This process takes several seconds and the air may ionize in several directions at once.
I hear that if your hair begins to stand on end, then the air around you is ionizing and you have become a candidate for a lightning rod. At this point, you have a few seconds to take cover before a bolt of lightning literally slams you out of your shoes.
In most cases, lightning strikes your head (the point that is most conductive due to static electricity). With that, you may have a chance if you give the bolt a path to least resistance that doesn't cross your vital organs. Grab your ankles! This will likely burn your arms and feet, but you have a chance of survival.
I should submit this data to Mythbusters. :p
