Fake or real tree?
Mr. P tried to talk me into getting an artificial tree this year, but I said no way Hosea! Although the fake ones are looking more real I enjoy the smell of my real tree. I also think it would be hard to store an artificial one without taking up alot of attic space. Any thoughts?

Fake trees don't bother me.. as long as they are green.. deck 'em out with christmas decorations etc.. looks like a darn christmas tree.. no needles to fall off on the floor etc.. that's my .02 on the subject :peace: |
For our family, it is a matter of allergies. We have a fake tree out of necessity. Doesn't smell as good but it feels much better :D
|
We have a 40-ish year old fake tree we inherited from my wife's grandmother. We store it in that little wedge-spaced area in the closet under our stairs.
|
We've had a fake tree for three years now. I was once like you, and swore that I would never own a fake tree. But now it's just too convenient. We have carpet now, and I don't want to deal with the mess. Plus the tree comes with the lights already on it.
|
Well I'm totally alone on this one! It is part of our tradition to have the real deal so I'm standing my ground! I'm alone on dealing with the mess that comes with it as well.

Real trees are nice but I do not smell the fresh pine in the house ?? I would go for the artificial tree in a heart beat save money and reduce my carbon footprint :D
|
I have a fake tree. I honestly don't have time to water and take care of real tree seeing that I am a single mom of 2 small ones. To help with the pine scent, I have yankee candles. Christmas Wreath is a good one. Also, I love the no mess with a fake tree as well as not having to string a lot of lights.

Real tree, definately. No contest.

I wish I had videoed me putting up my tree which is not only fake, but pre-lit with like zillion little lights. I zipped open the bag and stood up the first section that already had the stand attached. I then added the second section and plugged in the power cord. Same for the third second. I placed the angel on top, and found an extension cord and plugged it in. Voila! Dad's job is done. It didn't take long for the four of us to decorate it. It reminds me of all those pretty commercial trees on Charlie Brown's Christmas! :p
If I like the smell of pine, I would go out and buy a pine scented wall plug-in or something. Maybe just pour a jigger of pine sol into a dish and leave it out.. :peace: |

I tried using a cardboard box one year and yellow jackets made the biggest nest inside that I ever saw. Or you could just leave it up year around.. :D But the good news is that you'll have a tree next year and the next, and the next.... Congrats! |

Fake tree...and mine is covered with so many ornaments you can't really see if it's real or not. It came with the lights on it which is nice. I do put some fresh cedar around in a couple of arrangements and that way I get the aroma of some fresh, cut greenery.

Real, Real, Real,!!!! I love the smell. It reminds me of the Mountains. When I'm done with it in the house I move it outside around my birdfeeders and the birds love it.

Fake, no mess, reusable:laugh:

I love the feeling of walking out of the woods with a nice tree- "the fresh kill":D
|
BTW I have a gas log fireplace also :p

Fake tree and real wood. You know wood is good :D

Cons-I do miss the smell of a real wood fire, and the sound. |

I love a real fire. Last year we had a good one going and I thought I would recycle some cardboard and "kick it off". I've heard about chimney fires and knew what to look for. I was feeding the fire to really get some heat in the house and something didn't sound right. I went outside to look at the chimney and flames were shooting out about 2-3 ft. I shot the hose up at the chimney and it got worse. Long story short I took the hose up on the roof and shot it down the chimney. It steamed like a fool. I ran in the house and my wife was sitting in front of the fire steady throwing paper and card board into it. I asked "didn't you see the water and the fire flare up" and she said she was afraid it would go out! It sounded like a train running through the house. I will never burn paper in the house again. |

My Mom was a firm believer in Incendiary Christmas Tree Mk.V –just rubbing your chilled hands next to a real tree would ignite it… but we had a real one anyway until… Discussed elsewhere in the forum – can’t recall where - but rhertz recalls the house (Dr. Tucker) across the street from where I grew up on Gilbert Dr that burned to the ground Christmas eve because of a tree. We were sitting at our picture window and noticed a glow over the house across the street and sure enough… well – everyone made it out but. Rhertz had an additional memory…, anyway this only confirmed my Mom’s suspicions. Reminds me about folks that have live candles on their tree. We had a manager xfer to Charlotte from Redmond, WA and they were tree hugger types (no vaccines for their kids, etc)– but they’d burn candles attached to this dry ass tree in their house. Needles everywhere. It was so dry. They had a party there and I wanted to stay close in case I needed to shake up my beer and spritz it at the tree before making my way thru the nearest window to escape. We have a fake tree, but use fresh greenery liberally thru-out the house. Mrs j.nc gets free greenery from the tree places cuttings (nice soft fir -lots of tree farms in the mountains west of here) and decorates all the neighbors mail boxes, swags the stairs, etc. |

 I've said it before, I'll say it again, doesn't take but two seconds to turn a live christmas tree into this .....

I love real fires. I cheat and have a gas starter. That is nice, no paper needed. I do like the idea of a switch though.
|
I not only have a gas log, I have a remote controlled gas log so I don't even have to get our of my chair to start a fire.
|
Pack mule wood each year but it is fun to keep the fire stoked and the smell and sound are good. Joe do you have a smoking jacket and a pipe to go with that remote control fire

We have four, count 'em four fireplaces. They all burn wood but one does have gas logs in it at the moment. Mr. Belle usually starts a fire every evening and then promptly fall asleep in front of it!!! Thank goodness he does too. It's the only way to get the remote out of his hand. |
We have both - a real tree we cut ourselves. It goes up only a few days before Christmas and comes down on 12th night. And the silver aluminum one that my MIL bought brand new in the 1950s. Also have some other smaller artificial ones around the house. Best of both worlds.
