2:15pm 1/10/08: Shreveport Water Pressure Back Up, Broken Valve being Repaired
SFD Chief David Glass: Water Pressure up from 29 psi to 82 psi – Repair in progress

Water is flowing freely again in Shreveport, that’s according to interim Shreveport Fire Chief David Glass. Glass tells SBLive!, that SFD divers stopped the leak around the broken valve about 2 o’clock this afternoon, and, subsequently, water pressure began to rise across the city.

Glass says that since the valve has been shut off, and has now been isolated, water is being re-directed to the other 3 main lines coming from the Amiss Water Treatment Pumping Station. With a clear area to work around the broken valve, repairs are now underway.

“We’re out of the woods, the water is totally off, repairs are being made and the pressure is coming back up”. that was the declaration by Mike Strong, Shreveport’s Director of Operational Services. Strong says by mid-afternoon citizens, homes and businesses throughout the City will begin to see water pressures that are pretty close to normal.

In a noon news conference at Government Plaza, Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover outlined several contingency plans, in the event the repairs could not occur in a timely manner. Director of Operational Services for Shreveport, Mike Strong, acknowledged the valve had been broken, during work by a contractor, hired by the City. Glover said a full investigation will follow.

Several local schools dismissed classes early, and area hospitals’ water needs were being
addressed by the Department of Homeland Security, according to it’s Director Sandy Davis. Davis was also present at the news conference.

The broken valve, and drop in water pressure began about 8 am, this Tuesday, January 10th. Residents are encouraged to run their water for a while, before using it, to free any sediment that might have backed up in the lines.
