>The six boys were charged with a legitimate crime that they committed.

A lot of people didn't agree with this because:

1. They were originally charged with attempted 2nd degree murder

2. Because of the murder charge their cases were moved from juvenile court to regular criminal court

3. The charges were reduced to aggravated battery, which requires a weapon be involved. The prosecutors claimed the boys' shoes were weapons

4. After the charges were reduced the boys were not moved back to the juvenile system even though aggravated battery isn't one of the crimes that allow juveniles to be prosecuted as adults

5. After the conviction was thrown out and the case ordered to juvenile court he remained in adult custody

All of this is moot, anyway, as all six of them will end up in prison eventually.
