Jerry Welfare's 2002 Buick Century was crossing the tracks Tuesday morning when the crossing arms came down, trapping him on the rails, Davis said.
A 50-car train hit the vehicle, sending it across four lanes of traffic.
Welfare died about nine hours later in the hospital, Davis said.
