Tangipahoa speedway to open in 2008 for races, concerts, fairs

Quote:
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A new, $100 million speedway in Tangipahoa Parish will be built to standards for NASCAR and Indy racing, and officials say the complex could be used for concerts, boat racing, fairs and as a hurricane evacuation center.
The track will be south of Kentwood, just off Interstate 55, on 1,500 acres bought by the investors. Plans call for a one-mile oval, asphalt track and a half-mile drag racing track, with 30 luxury suites and seating for 42,000.

Weber says a narrow quarter-mile stretch of water will make the track 1 of 3 in the country with nighttime speed boat drag racing.
I wish this could have been put here.

LA International Speedway Coming to Kentwood Area

Could Louisiana become home to a NASCAR race? That's what the developers behind the newly-announced Louisiana International Speedway are hoping, but the business sense of the man behind the wheel could be in question. The proposed $100 million racing complex could be set to open as early as spring of next year. WAFB's Avery Davidson reports on why it could be more than just a track.

Can't wait to see.

$100MM sounds kind of cheap for a NASCAR track.

Yeah at say 2.5 miles, 100MM sounds cheap for a Louisiana project. (under $50M per mile) Bob Odom must have his hands out of this one.

I went to the Coca-Cola 600 one year and they announced the attendance at over 200,000.

We used to have a racetrack at the fairgrounds which hosted the Firecracker 200 or something like that back in the 70's. It was ok, but I also remember high speed go-carts racing that track and I think I liked it better than the cars. Attendance was typical for Shreveport. I'd say about 5,000 back then.
