Post Alabama and Colorado to Meet in PetroSun Independence Bowl

PetroSun Independence Bowl officials announced on Sunday that the Alabama Crimson Tide will face the Colorado Buffaloes in the 2007 PetroSun Independence Bowl set for Sunday, Dec. 30 in primetime at 7 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN from Independence Stadium.

Alabama, representing the Southeastern Conference, enters the game with a 6-6 record while Colorado of the Big 12 Conference also owns a 6-6 mark. The Crimson Tide is making its second straight and third appearance overall in Shreveport, having previously beaten Iowa State by a score of 14-13 in the 2001 game, and falling to Oklahoma State by a 34-31 count last season. Colorado will be making its debut in the Independence Bowl. Alabama and Colorado will meet for the third time with the teams splitting the first two contests. The Crimson Tide won the last meeting, 30-25, in the 1991 Blockbuster Bowl in Miami, Fla.

“We are excited about hosting these two fine institutions in the 2007 PetroSun Independence Bowl, and having Colorado for the first time,” said PetroSun Independence Bowl chairman Joe Darwin. “We are thrilled to have Alabama back for a second-straight year and sure this will be a fantastic matchup on Dec. 30”.

This year’s contest marks the ninth Big 12-SEC matchup since the bowl first aligned with those two conferences in 1998 as Ole Miss faced Texas Tech. The SEC won the first six meetings before Missouri and Oklahoma State claimed the last two Independence Bowls.

The Crimson Tide, coached by Nick Saban, is making its 55th all-time bowl game appearance, which leads the NCAA, and the Tide has also won 30 bowl games in school history, which is also tops in college football history. Colorado will be playing in a bowl game for the 28th time and owns a 12-15 all-time mark.

Alabama opened the season 3-0 and was 6-2 after a victory over Tennessee on Oct. 20. The Crimson Tide finished 4-4 in SEC play. Alabama defeated both Arkansas and Tennessee during the course of the season, which are two teams that will play in New Year’s Day bowl games.

The Buffaloes, who also finished 4-4 in conference play, finished third in the Big 12’s North division. Colorado defeated then-No. 3 Oklahoma 27-24 on Sept. 29 in Boulder, Colo., in its signature victory of the season. Colorado also beat Texas Tech, who will play Virginia in the Gator Bowl on New Year’s Day, by a score of 31-26 on Oct. 27.

The 2007 PetroSun Independence Bowl will be played in primetime on Sunday, Dec. 30 as the game kicks off at 7 p.m. on ESPN from Independence Stadium. The PetroSun Independence Bowl is the only bowl game that day.

Tickets and corporate sponsorships are still available for the 2007 PetroSun Independence Bowl as well as the Minuteman Luncheon and FCA Breakfast, and can be obtained through a variety of methods. Tickets and sponsorships can be purchased by calling the Independence Bowl Foundation at (318) 221-0712 or toll free at 888-414-BOWL (2695) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or at www.independencebowl.org. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Bowl office located at 401 Market Street, Suite 120 on the main floor of the American Tower in downtown Shreveport.
