State. Rep. Mike Powell of Shreveport unexpectedly resigned from the Louisiana Legislature today just weeks before he was to begin a second term, citing strains on his family.
Powell, who once told friends his ambition was to be a U.S. congressman, said the demands of politics have taken too much time away from his family.
Powell, 46, won a second term in the House of Representatives without opposition in October and was scheduled to be sworn in Jan. 14. He insisted there were no other reasons beyond family considerations for leaving politics. He is married with seven children.
"It has become clear to me the needs of my family come first and the time required in my current elective position has simply become more than I can successfully give," Powell said.
Powell said he will be working full time at his private law practice. He has been working with a downtown law firm; Louisiana Secretary of State's records classify his private practice, Powell Law Firm, as not in good standing for failure to file a current annual report.

If these people are going to quit why run in the first place. This being almost his 2nd term knew the time demand on him, so he should not have run for re-election.
