Mayor Glover: MLK Holiday, “A Day On, Not A Day Off”
Monday, January 21st, National Holiday becomes “A Day of Service” Glover Declares By: Tom Pace, Executive Editor, SBLive! January 16th, 2008 Flanked by members of AmeriCorps & Shreveport Green Volunteers, Shreveport Property Standards, T.B.O.N.E. Rangers, and City Department Heads, Shreveport Mayor Cedric B. Glover declared the upcoming Martin Luther King Holiday, “…a day on, and not a day off,” Glover’s life of public service was inspired by the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Nobel prize winning champion for civil rights. And while some observe the holiday with parades, celebrations and revelry, Glover believes in a more appropriate way to honor the legacy of Dr King. Simply stated, Mayor Glover encourages the community “… to commit to a day of service, in your neighborhood, at your school, through your church, social organization, anywhere within your community.” Opening ceremonies for the ‘Martin Luther King Service Day’ begin at 8am, Monday, January 21st, 2008 in the MLK Community Center, to be attended by Mayor Glover and other dignitaries. At some point throughout the MLK Service Day, Glover will be joined by Louisiana’s U.S. Senator, Mary Landrieu, and Louisiana’s Lt. Governor, Mitch Landrieu. The ceremonies are open to the public. |
