I stand corrected. However, Wikipedia says this shuttle mission failed during re-entry, not while it was still in space. Therefore, I'll rephrase my original comment. "We have never actually lost an American in space," is what I meant. All failed missions either blew in the atmosphere or didn't take off at all.

You are right though, Joe, it was in space and did not make it back. But the astronauts still weren't in space when it happened.

The HBO series "From the Earth to the Moon" is a later project of Tom Hanks after Apollo 13 and it is my favorite of all my DVD collections. It should be required viewing in middle school IMHO

Lol! We lost Ellen Ripley only once in Aliens 3. She was the sole survivor of the first 2 movies and her clone survived Alien Resurrection. Also, she wasn't in space when she died. She was on a prison planet in Aliens 3 and took a hot lead bath. The movie series was ok, but Aliens Vs. Predator was way better.

Interesting...."AVP" has been roundly criticized as a cinematic turd which has irreparably harmed BOTH franchises, and here we have some fans. Just goes to show that the critics sometimes get it wrong.

Critics are usually wrong.

There was only one useful critic, and that was the Ebert-Roeper combination. The only universal law of movies is that if Ebert liked it and Roeper didn't, it sucked. Any other combination told you nothing.
