A giant American flag served as the backdrop for the The PetroSun Independence Bowl Minuteman Luncheon in downtown Shreveport today. CBS Sports personalities Tim Brando and Spencer Tillman again hosted the luncheon.

Area dignitaries, along with Alabama and Colorado coaches and players were guests of the public event at Shreveport's new Convention Center. Brando and Tillman produced a fast-moving, hour-long program, based on the “College Football Today” program on CBS.

Community Renewal International, founded by Mack McCarter, received the 2007 Omar N. Bradley “Spirit of Independence Award.” The award is bestowed upon outstanding citizens, or organizations, which symbolize the spirit of freedom and independence on which our country was founded.

Founded in 1994, Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal works to restore the foundation of safe and caring communities, be rebuilding the system of caring relationships. Today, SBCR is an international model for all cities looking to bring renewal to their communities.

In another set of presentations, Niharika Jain and Sydney Rich have been named the two recipients of the 2007 “Willis-Knighton/PetroSun Independence Bowl Community Service Scholarships”.

Jain, representing Caddo Parish public schools, attends Caddo Magnet High School in Shreveport, while Rich, of Bossier Parish public schools, is a student at Parkway High School in Bossier City.

Jain ranks first in her class out of 301 students with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She is a National Merit semifinalist, an AP Scholar, serves as president of the National Honor Society, and is also president of the Science Olympiad Team.

Rich ranks first in her class with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She is a member of the National Beta Club, National Honor Roll, and National Honor Society. She twice attended the Northwest Louisiana Scholastic Rally and was a Louisiana Girl’s State Delegate in 2007.

“ The Independence Bowl is not just a football game, it is a showcase for the good things that exist in Shreveport and North Louisiana,” said James K. Elrod, president and CEO of Willis-Knighton Health System. “Through this partnership, we support the bowl and reward outstanding students who have demonstrated a commitment to community service shared by both the Independence Bowl and Willis-Knighton.” Each recipient receives $2,500 in scholarship money to go towards their college education, thanks to Willis-Knighton Health System.

Shreveport native, Scott Baker was named the bowl's “2007 Carl Mikovich Sportsperson-of-the-Year.” A 2000 graduate of Captain Shreve High School, Bakeris currently a member of the Minnesota Twins starting pitching rotation. He made his major league debut in 2005, and owns 17 victories in his young career.

Lift Up America CEO, Dave Hannah was recognized for the community tie-in with The Independence Bowl and Spencer Tillman, to help America’s less-fortunate. Founded in 2005 with a mission to give back to communities across the country, Lift Up America continues to nurture its vision of providing important necessities to families and instilling hope in the hearts of those less fortunate.

Players from both Alabama and Colorado helped unload a truckload of protein products donated by Tyson Foods yesterday at Fairgrounds Field, adjacent to Independence Stadium. The truck contained more than 31,000 pounds of poultry products that were distributed to approximately 30 local hunger relief agencies in the Shreveport area.

It was a day for giving, and recognizing...what the Independence Bowl really stands for.
