Post Gaming Has Been A Plus For Bossier

Bossier City's three riverboat casinos and the racetrack have been a part of the city's economy for decades.

It may have been a boost for Bossier's economy but I wonder how many lives have been devastated by gambling. How many marriages have been broken? How many children have been left at home without their parents so the parents could go gamble? I see the downside to it all. I think there were many other ways to boost an economy other than gambling.

I would argue, that long before the Riverboats were here, there were PLENTY of activities going on in this town, that helped to break marriages, and caused parents to leave their children home alone.

It's the same argument that Guns don't kill people...

There must be something said for the amount of people that get hired, that have a job BECAUSE the riverboats are here ?

Me personally, I don't care much for gambling at the riverboats. I've maybe spent $40 total at a casino. But I do head that way for some of the entertainment, catch a live band.

The Casino's have helped Bossier schools and roads and many other things. Shreveport takes the money and builds parking lots on the red and the Hightower Hilton what a boondoggle There are always those who can not handle temptation and the Casino's are there 24/7 to help them loose their money but so is video poker and many other things. Good post LN I do not give them my money but I have been down their and lost when they opened only to find out that gambling is not for me.

I do agree with both of you but was it the best way to bring more revenue to the city or was it the easiest way?

And yes, Shreveport just doesn't know how to handles it's money or rather Hightower knew how to handle it to help his friends get rich. I wonder when he will get indicted by the Feds. Isn't that still a possibility?

I am sure that the Feds are looking at the boy and his buddies and it might be a year but they will get him before 08 ! It was not something I would vote for but it is here now so make the best of it.

I worked for Isle of Capri back years ago before it became Diamond Jacks, so I've been on the inside of the casino establishment. Casinos do take many reasonable measures in an attempt to discourage people from developing gambling problems. Though casinos do make a fast buck from the average player, it's the BIG rollers they are primarily targeting (people who have thousands or more to burn). Therefore, they do try to prevent their patrons from getting sucked into compulsive gambling.

They make every employee memorize that Gambling Help Line that is posted on every wall of the casino floor and they are encouraged to tell people about it. The ATMs have very high usage fees to discourage people from overusing them. Security personnel (the dept I was in) are highly encouraged to keep a sharp eye out for people who exhibit poor gambling habits (i.e. losing streak temper, sleeping in the casino, writing several checks a night, abusing the machines, asking for hand-outs, etc.). These people are sent off the property and other local casinos are notified with a photograph and told not to let this person gamble.

People who don't have the will to stop when they need to do not need to be there. We each have our responsibilities too.

There is a whole philosophy to proper gambling:
  • Never enter a casino expecting to win! This way, losing doesn't disappoint you and winning becomes a bigger thrill.
  • Never enter a casino with your last dollar!
  • Set a loss limit that will determine when you leave and stick to it!
  • Whenever possible, pocket your initial cash and gamble with your winnings only. This way, your gambling experience becomes self-funded.
  • Always remember that if winning was easy, everyone would do it!
  • Always leave the casino with some money left, even if it is just a little.
  • Above all, enjoy yourself!

These are great tips that will enhance your gambling experience and ensure you have a great time when you gamble. However, they all depend on your will power to stick to them. Gambling can be very intoxicating, especially when you hit the jackpot on a one-armed bandit and begin losing it back. You just gotta know when to get up and leave.

As for me, I'm not really a gambler myself. If I had a few hundred dollars of free spending cash (which rarely happens), I might take one or two hundred to a casino and hit some blackjack tables. The last time I did was about 2 years ago.

Gambling is not for me either LN but I've spent many a night at the Oak Creek lounge listening to live music. I have also attended some of their concerts in the Riverdome... wish the acoustics were better, but yes I love some good live music!!! I'm also glad the Bossier school system has benefited and continues to do so from the boats.
