Civil War Cannonball Discovered In Waterway

http://www.wbaltv.com/news/14717479/detail.html

Quote:
The State Fire Marshal's office said Wednesday that dredging crews have uncovered what appear to be three Civil War-era cannonballs in a Baltimore waterway.

Deputy Fire Marshal Joseph Zurolo said an eight-inch cannonball discovered this week was one of three found recently.
The cannonballs are being tested to determine if they're still explosive. Zurolo said two of the three are in good condition.

He told the Baltimore Sun that the third "had more weathering."
Now this is interesting. I wonder who gets ownership of them, the company or the gov.

I didn't know cannonballs were explosive. I thought it was their weight and velocity that made them so lethal.

There was a man here locally that would have some cannonballs made, also locally, and bury them with rock salt. After a few weeks he would dig them up and take them around to these reenactments and sell them as authentic.

Were 8" cannonballs normally explosive? I thought that was mostly on cartoons.
