How to Evacuate 2 Million People from a Hurricane…
Or, I Survived Hiurricane Gustav (September 1st, 2008) 
(Deja Two) A second time around.

Labor Day, September 1st, 2008, and I'm watching the live television coverage of Hurricane Gustav...a storm that New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin earlier called "The Mother of All Storms." 

It's being called the single largest evacuation of people ever from the state of Louisiana. In fact, the Louisiana State Police estimate that some two million people have already evacuated the southern 19 parishes of south Louisiana, including nearly everyone from New Orleans.  

Who would have thought that yet another major hurricane would slam into the Louisiana coastline on the 3rd Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina back on August 29th, 2005. Not me.

This would turn out to be yet another opportunity, and challenge for the Northwest Louisiana emergency responders, along with the general public and faith-based communities, to help our neighbors and their pets, evacuating from the southern part of the state. 

That's right - pets, too.  This time around, there's a large facility set-up in the Livestock Barn at the Hirsch Coliseum that will accommodate up to 5,000 pets. 

At a Sunday morning media briefing on August 31st, Sandy Davis described the situation facing Shreveport-Bossier and the Ark-La-Tex trying to house some 60 thousand evacuees.

Davis said area shelters across the metro area were already filled with nearly 8,300 evacuees, and there were still more on the way.

The Director of the Caddo-Bossier Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, Davis said all hotel and motel rooms are filled to capacity, with the closest lodging available from Dallas to the west, to Alabama in the east. (He said that Little Rock hotels were almost filled as well.)
