BOSSIER CITY, LA From The Times (By: Tom Pace, Talk of the Town) BREAKING: JUDGE DEWEY BURCHETT, JR. DIES 11-21-09 Former district judge in Bossier and Webster parishes for more than 20 years, Dewey Burchett Jr., passed away Friday, November 20th, 2009, at the age of 70.

Colleague and close personal friend, Caddo District Chief Judge Charles Rex Scott remembered Burchett as "...dedicated and hard-working," adding, “Dewey was very committed and very conscientious. I knew Dewey back when he first went on the district bench for Bossier-Webster parish.”

“We served on many judicial committees together, that addressed issues affecting all the judges in the entire state of Louisiana,” said Scott, who is in his first term as the District Attorney for Caddo Parish.

”I will certainly miss him as a friend and colleague,” said Scott.

According to Times reporter Drew Pierson, Burchett was first elected in 1988, and was one of six judges for Bossier-Webster District Court. Burchett presided over thousands of civil and criminal cases during his tenure, including the famed Thompson Gang armored car heist, and he was formerly the city attorney for Bossier City.

"He was the light of my life," said Pat Burchett, his widow.

Among other memberships, Burchett belonged to the Bossier Lions Club, Bossier Chamber of Commerce and the Shreveport Senior Squadron Civil Air Patrol.

Burchett, who received his law degree from LSU in Baton Rouge, also served as a flight instructor for the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era.

More recently, Burchett was known around Bossier and Webster parishes for a heated judge’s race in which he was beaten by former assistant district attorney Michael Craig.

This was the first time an incumbent judge had been challenged in Bossier or Webster parish for decades.

A Benton resident, Burchett is survived by two sons: Dewey III and Edward.

Burchett spent his 70th birthday, which was Wednesday, in the hospital.

Funeral arrangements were still pending Friday, Pat Burchett said.
