Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade Forecast for Sunday, January 27th: "Reigning Cats & Dogs"
Saturday, Jan 26, 2008 2:58pm

SHREVEPORT, LA    (By Tom Pace. Executive Editor, Talk of the Town)  Jan.26, 2008
“Reigning Cats and Dogs” is the forecast for the Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Parade this Sunday afternoon starting at 3 o’clock: under sunny skies and a high of 68. This 10th annual event will be held Riverview Park, across from the Sci-Port Discovery Center at Clyde Fant & Lake Street, downtown Shreveport.

Festivities begin this Sunday at 1:30pm, with the official 'Mutt Strut and Cat Stroll Parade' at 3pm. Judging will be held throughout the afternoon for various categories: Pet Owner Look-alikes; Most Unique; and, Best Representation of  this year’s theme: Reigning Cats & Dogs.

This year, a new event is being held: “The BEST PET TRICK” Contest…open to all animals. Open to the public, you can register your pet for just $10 the day of the event, with competition starting at 1:30 pm.

Grand Marshal for the 2008 Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade will be 12-Year Shreveport Veteran Firefighter, Johnny Wimberly.  Wimberly earned the honor of Grand Marshal, because of his heroic efforts back in October of 2007.  He was aboard SFD Rescue 1 when they were dispatched to a fire on Midway Street.

Upon arrival, Wimberly and other firefighters began battling the blaze…eventually Wimberly went inside the house, to find a small dog, not breathing.
Firefighter Wimberly carried the lifeless pet outside, began administering first aid with a pet oxygen mask…thereby reviving the dog, and saving its life.

Wimberly’s pet rescue kit mask, was donated thru the efforts of Caddo Girl Scout Kathryn Hinson. Hinson’s Girl Scout Silver Award Winning Project: Pet Rescue Kits, are now standard equipment of all fire trucks in Caddo & Bossier Parishes. She will accompany Wimberly, along with his wife & their personal pet puppy, in the Barkus and Meoux Grand Marshal’s Golf Cart.

Concessions from Shaver’s Catering will be available…as well as souvenirs from various pet vendors. Souvenir “Reigning Cats & Dogs” T-Shirts from the Krewe of Barkus & Meoux, will be available for $10 each.

The Royalty Raffle for registered parade participants will be held prior to the Mutt Strut & Cat Stroll at 3 o’clock. (Who knows your pet could be this year’s King or Queen, Lady or Lord.)

Last year, nearly 3,000 people attended the Barkus & Meoux Parade, with some 250 animal participants…ranging from Goats, Guinea Pigs, Ferrets, Donkeys, Rabbits, and of course, Kitties & Doggies of all shapes and sizes.

Various animal rescue organizations will have booths in Riverview Park: Hopeful Haven Equine;  Robinson’s Rescue;  Fazzled Ferret Rescue Group;  and, the Caddo Parish Animal Shelter…

Michelle Lindsey-Christian serves as Captain of The Krewe of Barkus & Meoux, with Cheryl Rockwell, as Queen Ambassador & Ray Abney as King Ambassador.
