BREAKING 5-14-08: Sen Vitter Announces $190.1 Million in Defense Funds For Barksdale AFB
Thursday, May 15, 2008 7:02am

WASHINGTON, D.C. (By: Tom Pace, Talk of the Town) BREAKING: MILITARY NEWS  10:15pm  5-14-08  U.S. Sen. David Vitter today announced the authorization of $14.6 million in the 2009 National Defense Authorization Act for the construction of a new Security Forces Squadron Complex at Barksdale Air Force Base.

The multi-million dollar award will be used to construct new security forces buildings, including administrative offices and a hanger facility.

“The Security Forces Squadron is currently housed in an outdated facility that dates back to the 1930s and is in non-compliance with existing land use policies,” said Vitter.

“The squadron’s command and operations functions need to be brought into compliance with base regulations, and it makes little sense to attempt to upgrade facilities that are already inadequate for the squadron’s purposes.  This funding will provide this unit with the new facilities and resources that they have deserved for well over fifty years,” he said.

Funds were also awarded for programs that will support the maintenance of the fleet of B-52 bombers at Barksdale, including $12.5 million to provide additional personnel authorized by the 2008 defense authorization bill; $95.9 million for operational and maintenance expenses associated with the fleet; $57.6 million for aircraft procurement and modifications; and $9.5 million for research and development associated with combat communications technologies.

"Barksdale plays a pivotal role in our nation’s defense, and it is of the utmost importance that we provide the resources needed to allow the units based there to do their jobs to the full extent of their abilities,” Vitter said.  “I will work to ensure that these funds are included in upcoming defense and military construction appropriations bill.”
