CRIMEWATCH 5-15-08 Shreveport Police Recognize Fallen Officers; CrimeStoppers Salutes Media

SHREVEPORT, LA (By: Tom Pace, Talk of the Town) CRIME WATCH:  1:30pm 5-15-08  Shreveport Police held two special events today.  The first, National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Week, recognized the fallen police officers who have sacrified thier lives in the line-of-duty.  Click here to listen as SPD Sgt. The event, was observed locally this Thursday, May 15th, 2008 at the Shreveport Fire and Police Memorial, located next to the Barnwell Center on Clyde Fant Parkway, in Shreveport, Louisiana.  

Shreveport Police Officer John Madjerick, who was shot in the line of duty in January, was the keynote speaker at today's National Law Enforecement Memorial Week Event. 

According to The Times, Madjerik thanked God for sparing his life.  In the article, the 23-year-old officer also paid tribute to the local law officials who weren’t as fortunate to survive line of duty injuries.

“It’s just good to know that they are not forgotten,” Shreveport resident June Cantrell said in a crackling voice. Cantrell received a red rose in honor of her brother Thomas Tompkins, a Shreveport police officer who was killed in 1978. “He died years ago, and it’s wonderful that they continue to honor him.”  

The next event, The First Annual Media Appreciation Luncheon was held today, and hosted by the Shreveport CrimeStoppers organization, at the University Club, in Shreveport, Louisiana. 

Sponsored by Bobby L. Greene Plumbing, and emceed by Shreveport Police Sgt. Jim Taliaferro, the Media Appreciation Lunch honored persons with various news organizations, and media-related businesses who contribute time and efforts to help CrimeStoppers tell their story to the public.  

Those members of the media present, were awarded plaques of appreciation for their efforts in helping to:
"take a bite out of crime."
