BREAKING ECONOMY 9:30pm 5-19-08 Shreveport BEAIRDCo Plant Closes: 427 Lose Jobs
Tuesday, May 20, 2008 6:37am

SHREVEPORT, LA  From The Times (By: Tom Pace, Talk of the Town) BREAKING: ECONOMY  9:30pm  5-19-08  427 BEAIRDCo workers in Shreveport, Louisiana have been laid off, as the wind-turbine manufacturing plant has temporarily shut down.  BEAIRDCo President Gerald Landry referred to the move as a “short-term furlough.”

Landry, who became president of the company in June 2007, said the furlough will last no later than June 1, and may be over in a couple of days.

Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover and his administrative staff have been aware for some time that Beaird was in financial trouble and have worked diligently with the State and Beaird in support of their efforts, to obtain working capital and possible State assistance, as well as to support Beaird’s efforts to negotiate contracts to build additional wind turbines at the plant.

“We are aware of other parties who are interested in the facility, however our immediate and most urgent concern is for the employees whose lives are being affected by this closure,” says Mayor Glover.  “We will entertain any and all offers for ventures to come into the former BeairdCo facility and provide even more jobs for our people.”

The City of Shreveport owns the land and building at the plant site of BeairdCo.
