Wednesday, Aug 27, 2008 3:08am
SHREVEPORT, LA From The Times; KTBS-TV3 (By: Tom Pace, Talk of the Town) BREAKING COMMUNITY NEWS 6pm 8-26-08  Services are set for a Caddo Parish Commissioner who was killed in a vehicle accident over the weekend. Family and friends will pay their final respects to Herschel Brown at 11 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Temple Baptist Church, 5024 Greenwood Road.

According to the Times, the family will accept visitors from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Winnfield Funeral Home, 3701 Hollywood Avenue.

Editor's note from Tom Pace: "As I previously wrote, I was stunned, shocked, and saddened to learn that Caddo Parish Commissioner Hershel Brown had died of injuries suffered in a one-car crash this past Saturday, August 23rd.  His mother, who was in the car with him, is recovering."

"Commissioner Brown was truly a man who loved his family, his community, and the Lord. Most importantly, The Lord.  Not always easy to say good-bye so suddenly, to someone you have grown to admire."

"But, that was Hershel - always helping somebody, whether it was on parish-time, or his own personal-time: he did his best to be there in a time of need."

"You've got to love and respect someone for that love of others. I did. And, I will miss him, terribly...as will all his many friends, colleagues, and family."

According to the KTBS-TV3 story, the crash happened around 11 o'clock Saturday morning in Shreveport on La 3132, near Kingston road. Shreveport police say Brown was killed when his car ran off the road and hit a tree.

Brown was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Authorities say there is some evidence that leads them to believe Brown may of had a medical issue prior to the crash. They're awaiting autopsy results.

Brown's mother, Charlie Jack, 84, was taken to Christus Schumpert with non-life threatening injuries. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Brown represented district 6 on the Caddo parish commission. Caddo commissioner Sam Jenkins Jr. will remember Hershel Brown as a hardworking man who was serious about changing the community. Even before he became a commissioner in January of 2008.

Jenkins says Brown had some medical issues in then past but had been doing better.

Brown was a member of several different organizations in the community including the NAACP and Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. Jenkins says he always brought valuable information to the table. Jenkins describes Brown as a positive, fun loving guy who took his work serious but also had a sense of humor.

Jenkins says in the coming weeks they'll have to find a temporary replacement for Brown's district 6 seat. He says a special election may be called to fill the position.
