PET EVACUEE NEWS 8-29-08 Evacuee Pets Welcome: Volunteers, Supplies Needed Sat. Aug 30th

SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER, LA (By: Tom Pace, Talk of the Town) BREAKING: PET EVACUEE NEWS 10pm 8-29-08  The welcome mats and kennels in Shreveport and Bossier are out for any of the pet evacuees from south Louisiana. It's estimated  that 60% of all evacuees will have pets with them, according to Sandy Davis, Director of the NW La. OEP Homeland Security. 

The chancellor of the LSU AgCenter is asking for volunteers for the Louisiana State Animal Rescue Team (LSART). That pet shelter is being set up in Shreveport at the State Fair of Louisiana Livestock Barn. Beginning Saturday, Aug. 30, up to 250 volunteers per day will be needed to assist at the Fair's shelter and assistance will be needed for seven to 10 days. 

Volunteers will receive on-site training and vet services will be provided. Training will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and pets are expected to arrive at noon.

Meanwhile, Bossier P.I.O. Mark Natale says the
Bossier City Animal Control is asking for volunteers to help with the temporary pet shelter that is being set up at Tinsley Park on the soccer field next to the Animal Control Building.

Volunteers will be needed beginning Saturday, August 30 to assist with operations. Pets may begin arriving at the temporary shelter as early as Saturday as evacuees begin checking into area shelters.

Persons who are interested in volunteering are asked to come by Bossier Animal Control at 3217 Old Shed Road Saturday morning beginning at 8 a.m. to sign up.
