GUSTAV SHELTERS UPDATE 11pm 8-29-08 Shreveport Police Annouce Evacuee Shelter Locations

SHREVEPORT, LA (By: Tom Pace, Talk of the Town) BREAKING: GUSTAV SHELTER NEWS 11pm 8-29-08  Evacuees arriving in Shreveport this weekend have several locations being opened across the area. Shreveport Police will be providing security for various locations throughout the city where citizens escaping from hurricane Gustav may come to seek temporary shelter. 

* Provisions have been established at the following locations to accommodate Critical Transportation Needs (only those arriving by state contracted buses into Shreveport).

 

* (Old) Sam's Club at Jewella and Meriwether Staffed at 6 PM, Friday Security Provided by SPD, LSP and National Guard

 

* Hirsch Coliseum - Staffed at 6:00 PM, Friday
Security at the Hirsch will be a joint operation between SPD, Caddo SO, and LSP. 

* Those evacuees being bussed who have pets will be taken to the Hirsch which will be open Saturday at 7 AM.

 

* Hwy 80 and Industrial (old outlet mall) - Staffed at 6 PM Friday Security provided by SPD, LSP and National Guard 

* LSUS (Youree Drive) - Staffed at 6:00 PM Friday 
Security provided by LSU-S (General population (self evacuees, those evacuees arriving in personal autos) will be sheltered until EOC determines acceptable capacity has been reached. 

Self-evacuees with pets should first be checked in to LSU-S then will be directed to an animal receiving facility.  Pet owners are encouraged to check local veterinarian and boarding facilities in addition to local are animal shelters. 

* Southern University 
Security provided by Southern University Police.  This location will be only opened at the direction of the Emergency Operations Center after determined LSU-S has reached acceptable capacity

 

ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFO:

 

* National Guard personnel have also been activated to assist with personnel management at the Critical Transportation arrival sites.  SPD and LSP will be at each to coordinate with the National Guard. 

 

* Self-evacuees with pets should first be checked in to LSU-S then will be directed to an animal receiving facility.  Pet owners are encouraged to check local veterinarian and boarding facilities

 

* The SPD Mobile Command Center and Caddo Parish SO bus will be at the Fairgrounds. 

 

* Shreveport Police Department has assigned Closed Market Teams, Support Personnel, OSI, Investigators and Administrative personnel to staff the Emergency Operations Center, Command Centers and the Hirsch. 

* SPD has dedicated personnel on each shift to respond to each shelter if requested.  On duty personnel will be responsible for transporting any persons arrested from the shelters. 

 

* Shreveport Police Department has taken every precaution and preparation to ensure response to calls for service will not be affected by this specialized staffing
