When fish is raw, you can really taste the spendid oils that make fish to healthy. Some are nearly buttery but much better for you. In fact, the more oily and buttery a fish is, the quicker it spoils, so in many cases, the more expensive (fatty) cuts are not available. Salmon belly and Tuna belly (Toro) are particularly nice and also White Tuna (Ecular Tuna?) is also buttery. If it tastes "fishy" then it isn't good.

So sure old fish would be gross/nasty to eat, even cooked IMO. But the fact is that sushi is nearly an all or nothing proposition by definition. Either it is good (fresh) or it is bad (not fresh). I've had both in our area.

There are all sorts of sea plants like kelp and "Nori" which is what you are probably talking about. Yeah it takes some getting used to, but if you can learn to enjoy it, it is extremely good for you. It reminds me of the ocean mist on the beach, but I like it crispy and not soggy. Sushi is meant to be eatten fresh right after it is made. I don't eat sushi leftovers.

I like mexican too. Every culture has it's raw fish recipes. I've had some ceviche in mexico that was awesome. Actually it is cooked in lemon juice which is acidic and turns the fish white. Now pickled herring can be pretty strong for me.

Just say NO to sushi

rhertz you can type til you are blue in the fingers, but my mind will not be changed! I hardly enjoy cooked fish much less raw!!! I have tried it a few times because my significant other just knew I would like it. He kept insisting I'd never had it the right way. He has finally stopped trying and it saves him alot of money too! He only has to buy for himself!

If I die, I will die healthy! Folks in Japan who eat sushi live like 300 years or something. :D

I actually tried sushi today for the first time. I must say it was delicious. It was a "to go" order, so no specialty serving as posted above by Isaac. Salmon & tuna - mmmmm....

I might as well admit that I like raw oysters, too - with hot sauce & saltines. Sorry ladies. I hope it's not too disgraceful to our alliance, but I like it raw...

Isaac-Saxxon 05-12-2007 06:58 PM

She loves me ? She loves me not  I sure hope the sushi was fresh and the table too

Congratulations Sheba!! I am very proud of you for trying sushi. The fact that you liked it has me pleased as well but it takes guts that first time. The next time you eat cooked salmon and tuna, today's experience will give you a whole new perspective. I used to like cooked fish (and still do) but IF IT IS FRESH ENOUGH I prefer my tuna or salmon raw with a bit of soy sauce mixed with wasabi. Seared (very rare) is good too.

Here's a pretty good receipe for tuna tartar. Cube up some sushi grade tuna into 1/4 inch cubes and do the same for some cucumber. Add some olive oil and seasoning and mix it all together and press it into a mold and punch it out onto a plate. Serve it with your favorite chips. I like a squirt of hot chili sauce in it.

IMHO the very best raw tuna dish in town is at Superior Steakhouse. It is an appetizer called "Seared Ahi Tuna" and it is how tuna is supposed to be, even in Shreveport.

So you like the Tuna RHertz ? Me too Sir. I have a dvd on how to make the best sushi you might have to check it out one day. Sheba I hope you try it again just dont let the kids try it they will like it and it cost big time for the family to go to the sushi bar.

My 14 year old son likes raw tuna just like I do. At sushi bars, he orders "Tuna Tataki" which is seared tuna resting in Bonju sauce which is sweet. You know how kids are. It's a real father/son thing to sit at the sushi bar and watch sports on TV and eat tuna.

I told you I could spot orchids ANYWHERE! You should be proud of me for not getting distracted! ;)

This picture remins me of a Sean Connery movie called "Rising Sun" where the bad guy was getting sushi off a high priced Ho. But he turned out to be the scape goat and not the bad guy afterall. But still, he was pretty bad to be so decadent....

piemaker720 05-12-2007 10:19 PM

I'm glad you know your flowers but I still think you and Isaac are distracted a little. So therefore grasshopper, wife sees, wife pulls wings off grasshopper. HaHa!

Thanks!! I was a bit hesitant-a little worried about texture more than taste- but I was with an experienced sushi eater so I had great guidance in what to try. I would have been lost otherwise. It was very fresh and delicious. And I feel very accomplished, too! There's power in trying new things and conquering even a small fear. :)

piemaker720 05-13-2007 07:16 PM

I don't know about Sushi, But I just had some of the best fried fish OMG. Fried Bream, french fries, hushpuppies, mozzerella sticks and onion. I am in heaven and also very full.

We must be bored, huh? Maybe just a little weary of the serious headlines and looking for something a little lighter to think about. That's why I love Piemaker's humor! Where's Kosmo?

Isaac-Saxxon 05-14-2007 07:44 PM

Why does anybody watch the food channel  We love to look at, smell , cook and eat the stuff and when we can skip cooking then all the better. There is two things that smell like tuna and one of them is tuna and the other one would be sliced clam with some wasabi on top ;)

BossierDude 06-22-2007 10:42 PM

Hey, does anyone know where I can buy some edamame in the shreveport-bossier region. I had some at a friends house last week and i've been really craving some ever since. His step-mother got hers at Sam's Club, but I can't go there (I don't want to pay $25 for a membership card) so do you know anywhere else to get some? Like Target or Wal-Mart?

Will it be labeled as edamame on the box or what? What do I need to look for?

Thanks in advance for advise.

Pocahontas 06-22-2007 11:49 PM

Hi and welcome to SB Live!
I have purchased edamame at Wal Mart near the fresh veggies. It comes in a cardboard container similar to a frozen food box. It has pictures of the actual beans on the box. I think Albertsons has it as well! Good luck!:)

Kroger has it in the frozen veggies section. Between the black eyed peas and the tater tots... Up high on the shelf.

rhertz 06-23-2007 12:21 AM

BTW, I ate sushi tonight! :D

Salmon belly, yellow tail, and some spicy tuna. Had some saki too! ;)

Hey BD glad to see your post. Yes they have it at Albertsons, Asian Market and Sam's too. It is called edamame and it is very well priced. I think I will have sushi to night and some wine with that. Welcome aboard and enjoy your edameme and stand by for some super gas powered farts

joepole 06-24-2007 01:21 AM

People that like well-done meat are great to be with with because you can get them the cheapest, oldest piece of meat that's on sale in the bargain bin at the grocery and they can't tell the difference. They're almost as good a s people that put ketchup on steak.

Girl you haven't lived until you've eatten some raw salmon, tuna, or yellowtail belly!! But...............I know what you mean because I don't eat raw oysters either. I will eat them fried.... Oh, fried oyster po-boy.. It's late and I'm hungry.. Wonder what's in the fridge....... :D

Isabella 06-24-2007 01:25 AM

Joe, I don't put Ketchup on steak. I am very particular how my steak taste. If it has a strong taste, I will not eat it. Steak is not my favorite food, anyway. Grilled chicken is my favorite meat. I like it well-done. If it is slightly pink I will not eat it.
