This is great photo. My father was a Byrd grad and my mom a Fairpark grad and I think those were the only two high schools in town at the time. I am a grad of Capt. Shreve.

There were a few public schools prior to 1870 but not much is known. There were only 1200 pupils in the entire parish. Public school #1 was co-ed known as the McCreery School and later the Baker St. School 1878-1898. #2 was the Shreveport Female Institute at Crockett and Market. #3 the Caddo Academy, an all male school at Travis and Louisiana. They were merged and called the Edwards St. School which closed in 1907. Three colored schools were also organized at this time, Peters at Marshall and Franklin 1872-1904, C.C. Antoine at Caddo and Marshall 1876-1904, and #6 at Crockett and Cotton where Texas Ave. intersects 1876-1883. In 1892 the first high school was established and space was rented at the YMCA, until Shreveport High was completed at Hope and Snow 1899-1925. From 1928-1956 there were only Byrd, Fair Park and Central Colored, which closed when BTW opened in 1956. Woodlawn 1959 Shreve and Northwood 1968. Eric Brock's Shreveport. Go buy it.

Can anybody help me figure what is what in that photo? I'm assuming that the camera is pointed at the SW corner of the building (the one closest to Glenwood) but if that's the case the front of the building doesn't seem right for Byrd.
Another possibility is that we're looking at the NW corner (i.e. the pic was taken form the corner of Line/Kings) but if that's the case then the front of the building (on the right in the photo) is REALLY wrong. Are sure this is Byrd? Also, is that a graveyard in the foreground? If not, what's with the short vertical pieces? |

Either that, or maybe a lot of workers died on that job... |
