Post Brooks & Dunn donate KaBOOM Playground to SBCR

Brooks & Dunn in Shreveport to Donate KaBOOM Playground to SBCR

by Tom Pace, Executive Editor, Shreveport.com

It’s all about the kids. That’s why native son Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn are each donating a KaBOOM Playground to their favorite charity & community. And it happened in Shreveport, Thursday, October 25th about 9 o’clock when the Country Music Duo burst on the scene.
Kix had recently won the Academy of Country Music’s (ACM) Home Depot Humanitarian Award, and part of the prize, was having a KaBOOM Playground built in just one day. Kix chose Shreveport.
Ronnie chose Nashville, Tenn.

They arrived amidst a whirlwind of media coverage at the corner of West College and Missouri, in Shreveport’s Queensborough neighborhood. Live shots from local TV stations…photographers & videographers documenting the day’s activities…and, over 300 volunteers from Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal (SBCR) …Home Depot…area leaders…and the like. Why, David Toms was even there (minus a driver).

It’s been at least a decade since I’ve visited with my friends, Kix and Ronnie. I know they were truly humbled by this award, and this experience. To have a playground built in ONE DAY, is something
remarkable…to have it donated and named in your honor, is really another. You can hear their interview, along with interviews with Dr. Mike Leonard, folks from the Home Depot , and SBCR Director Mack McCarter in my podcasts on SB Live.

And so the Kix Brooks SBCR Home Depot KaBOOM Playground became a reality. Armed with screwdrivers, pliers, ratchet wrenches and the like, they gave up pickin’ and singin’ to buiiding on higher ground for SBCR Director Mack McCarter, personal friend Dr. Michael Leonard (and SBCR Assistant Director), and the staff of Community Renewal.

The community responded in a big way to the call for volunteers, and that’s impressive. According to Mack McCarter, there are some 8,000 children living around this area of Queensborough, and just down from Curtis Elementary School. It’s for sure this playground will see lots of smiles, and hear lots of laughter for years to come.

I think it's great that Brooks & Dunn continue to remember and support their hometowns. Not all stars do that after they leave and make it big.
