Comments on: Broccoli planting time just around the corner
Reader comments and feedback for the Broccoli planting time just around the corner photo.
This image is part of the Green Giant Garden Group photo gallery The word broccoli comes from the Latin bracchium, meaning arm[1], via the Italian braccio. Broccoli is a cultivar of wild cabbage, remaining exactly the same species. Wild cabbage originated along the northern and western coasts of the Mediterranean, where it was apparently domesticated thousands of years ago. That domesticated cabbage was eventually bred into wildly different cultivars, including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, and brussels sprouts, all of which remain the same species.

|

This is one of the Broccoli heads from last winter. Yes winter is when it does best. I will plant my Broccoli patch the first week in Sept. You can buy plants at Lowes or Home Depot. I find it hard to get plants of any size at local plant nurseries. I choose Pac Man Broccoli which is a hybrid. You must keep it watered for the first month then it will produce until March.
