Presidential politics and the health of Ground Zero workers loomed over the former World Trade Center site this Sept. 11 perhaps more than at any other anniversary since the attacks.

I still remember where I was on that day. I was standing on the deck of the USS Spruance in Mayport, Florida. We were getting ready to make way and head out onto the Atlantice for some battle group exercises when we got the news that both towers got hit. We immediately started sailing north, but we never got to New York before receiving our stand down orders.

Godspeed to all those brave firefighters who gave their lives that day to save others. Surely there is a special place in heaven for such men as that.
