The screeching harpies of the news industry have already removed any meaning from the word "torture" so I'm not impressed anymore. This headline tells me nothing.

Let me take a stab at it. Torture is physically hurting someone else on purpose to fulfill an agenda, unlike an accident where there was no intent to harm anyone, it just happened due to negligence or whatever... So... How'd I do?

These people should be in jail for life. They should never again see the light of day.

If you read the article it tells plenty! Just awful!

That would make all warfare, execution, and even boxing "torture."

Warfare, yes, by some definitions, would be considered torture.

By execution, if you mean the conventional sense like the gas chamber and lethal injection, are painless and except for death, they do not cause physical harm.

Boxing, sure, some people might consider that torture as it can get hard to watch if you're squeemish.

My definition of torture, though, would be: "To cause physical discomfort or pain in order to persuade a subject against their will toward a certain result or goal."

Boxing I would not consider torture because it is voluntary. No one has o box, no one makes you box.

Uh, if I may...the gas chamber is most definitly not "painless"...particularly when the condemned attempt to hold their breath, which most of em do! Typically, the throw of a lever releases a cyanide "egg" into a small acid-filled vat, producin the lethal vapors. Not to say that I personally am against this means of execution, I'm all for anything that enhances the dirtbag's sufferin.

Yes it would. War is Hell. Hell is torture. Therefore War is torture. Execution is torture, but hey, I didn't say I was against all torture. Boxing is torture if you ask me. It pains me to watch it! But you make a good point. My definition should mention that the one being tortured didn't volunteer for the activity. Maybe the only exception being the draft.

Now come on, there are different kinds of torture. The kind that is involuntary or there is voluntary. I can't talk bad about the voluntary because hey no one made you, this is where boxing comes in. Boxing is nothing but a voluntary @ss whipping, so be it. Then you got your kinky little bedroom ventures, again voluntary. But beating a child is involuntary and that is bad. So torture to me is anything that is done involuntary, against someone's will.

I've seen these shows on the Discovery Channel where some subcultures pierce people through their skin and suspend them from the ceiling, trees, etc. But since they volunteer for all that, I wonder if it could still be considered to be "torture"? Looks like it to me.

You can't torture someone that enjoys it.
