You windoze users
O.k. I don't see how you WINDOZE users do it. I'll admit right up, I'm a macintosh user, have been forever. I've used windows computers off and on over the years, different versions. I'm a firm believer in that different operating systems serve their purpose. Linux, windoze, Mac etc..
So here recently, I had the need for a windoze box. Since I have one of the new iMacs with an Intel processor. I installed Windoze XP Pro /w service pack 2 onto this iMac. Installation went without a hitch, I immediately installed all of the freakin' "Critical windoze updates" .. several times, until it was happy with itself. Then I had a handy drivers CD provided by Apple, that I installed, after which, audio, microphone, built in quick cam, and wireless networking all started working fine. Now I'm constantly reminded about my lack of freakin' virus software! So I listen to the constant warning about it, download some 90 free trial for virus software (what a scam) and install the software.. where it then tells me, CHECK FOR UPDATES, and off it goes, downloading updates etc etc.. and it feels the need to constantly alert me to my wireless network status. LOL, I could go on some more.. but damn.. all this just sucks the life out of any enjoyment of a new "OS" anyways.. |

of course, after I download and install all the freakin' virus software updates. I get the dreaded "The location of your mouse has changed, please restart your computer".. which I do, then immediately afterwards I get "There are more updates for you virus software".... what fun

Many virus software packages these days come with free updates. AVG is the best one I have seen. It gets regular updates and you can set the program to do its thing during the late hours of the evening while you're in bed. My computer gets updated and scanned every night and I never have to watch it happen. As for you, LateNight, I'm sure there are far fewer viruses for Macs because fewer people use them. If everyone used Macs, there would be more people writing viruses to infect them. The virus software industry would then turn its guns on the Macintosh, and then Macs will require regular updating too.

1. You can turn off the virus warnings
2. Antivirus software is pretty useless/superfluous for competent users. |

I don't think the virus and spyware threats are influenced by the conpetency of the user nearly as much as where the user goes and what activities they engage in over the web. (warez, porn, downloads, free offers, etc.)

You actually have a point. I can clean my system by hand if needed. I normally use AVG though so I don't have to worry about it.

I have never in my life had to clean out spyware, a virus, a trojan, adware, or anything else similar on my own PC. I've also never installed a virus scanner on my own PC.
Why? Because I don't do stupid things like click on links in email messages or run ActiveX controls on sites I don't trust. |

If you do any shopping online or researching via search engines, then I'm willing to bet that you are host to dozens of threats right now. Conversely if you ran adaware or spybot, etc., I seriously doubt it would come back with 0 threats found.

True. At the very least, Ad-aware would find tracking cookies.

Google knowing that I like to look at horse porn doesn't harm me in any way. Privacy is a myth.
