"Super Tax Day": Free Tax Filing for Low Income Workers
‘Super Tax Day’: Free Tax Filing for Low to Moderate Income Workers
FREE Tax Preparation for Eligible Filers: 9a-4p Thursday, January 31st By: Tom Pace, Executive Editor, SBLive! January 16th, 2008 Every April 15th, the tax man cometh, and the people giveth. This time however, eligible tax filers can get a break, with FREE Tax Preparation and Filing by The Northwest Louisiana Asset Building Coalition in collaboration with the Louisiana Department of Social Services, the LA Department of Revenue, and the I.R.S. Thursday, January 31st, from 9am to 4pm, those participating agencies will provide FREE Tax Preparation and Filing, a Super Tax Day for low-to-moderate income workers with incomes between $12,590 & $39,783 (filing status applies). The coalition’s objective is to help ensure that eligible Tax Filers take advantage of Earned Income Tax Credits and several other eligible credits to provide them with greater access to income for their individual household needs. FREE Tax Preparation and Filing is available to them; no filing fees, no loans, no interest, and no hassles. The coalition also strives to offer additional services to those who have need, i.e.; financial literacy, money management, credit repair, and asset building as available within their communities. Super Tax Day will occur, at Municpal Auditorium, at 705 Elvis Presley Boulevard, Shreveport, LA. The NWLA Asset Building Coalition is coordinating the event and additional information may be obtained by dialing 2-1-1 or 318-227-2100. F.Y.I. “The Brookings Institute” reports that less than 2% of EITC Claimants use FREE Tax Assistance Services, and that the estimated EITC Claims filed annually in Louisiana, 1 Billion dollars x 10% = 100 Million dollars of estimated and UNCLAIMED EITC dollars due Louisiana low income workers. Individuals and families interested in taking advantage of this program should review the following eligibility guidelines: • Household income cannot exceed $39,783 (married filing joint). • You have not worked and/or lived in another state during 2007 (unless you are a victim of Katrina or Rita, and were displaced to either of these disasters). • You must have been a U.S. Citizen or resident alien for all of 2007. • You must have a valid social security number. • You cannot be filing as "married filing separately." • You are not the qualifying child of another person.
